New Calling!

For the past year I have been teaching the same class in Primary in our ward at church. In January, when the kids moved up to a new class they didn't have a teacher for them. The leaders told me I did a really good job with them so they wanted me to stay teaching them. I was a little bummed because I was excited to get to know new kids, but that's okay. I really loved the kids in that class anyway, although they are quite challenging at times. The primary presidency finally decided that Justin (who was teaching the 9 year old class) should come and co-teach with me because the boys in my class (there are 4 boys and 1 girl) could benefit from an extra teacher to keep them in line. So, I was really excited because I love spending time with my husband and this way we would get to be together all through church.
Yesterday was to be our first time teaching together, then Saturday rolls around and the 2nd counselor in the bishopric calls us to ask if he can come over. He told me that they want me to be the new Primary Music Director. AH! Everyone in our ward knows that our current (now previous) music director was the epitome of primary music directors. She was superb! I even had fun learning the primary songs. She did such a wonderful job and is such a sweetheart, all the kids love her.
Anyway, I am scared silly to follow her. I almost feel sorry for the kids. Most people think that since I can sing fairly well, I will do great. I hope they're right because I don't exactly feel that way myself. I met with the other director today and she gave me a bunch of pointers and tips and some of her materials, for which I am forever in debt. I will probably have to call her over the next week as I prepare for my first time directing.
So, yesterday, Justin and I got to teach together for the first AND last time. He will just have to teach them himself now, I'm sure they are in the process of getting him a co-teacher now.
If any of you reading this have any helpful pearls of wisdom or ideas for fun how-to-teach-kids-a-song activities, they would be greatly appreciated.

Despite my horror at being called to this calling, I am excited in the fact that I know I wouldn't have been called were I not capable. The Lord does have a hand in His church and directs the leaders in their choices, and they chose me. I will just continue to pray and to prepare as much as possible, and God will help with the rest.

I remember one particular music lesson in primary when I was a kiddo. The music director taught us all how to lead in the correct time signature of the piece of music we were learning.
She bought a bunch of long plastic soup spoons from the dollar store and had us hold them up (fat side out to avoid prodding) and we all followed a long with her arm as the pianist played the music.
I've never forgotten how to lead music and I can do so in all the time signatures.

I remember reviewing the hymn book in this lesson to to look at the time signature pages that teach you the very same thing.

A very worth-while lesson. I hope you can use this idea to your advantage!
Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you!
